All-State Jazz Choir |
The All-State Jazz Choir will include up to 20 singers, who will have a day-long rehearsal on December 7, 2024, at Rockford High School, followed by rehearsal at the Michigan Music Conference (January 25-27). This will culminate in a performance at the Specialized Choral Hour at the J.W. Marriott Ballroom on January 25, 2025. The choir will rehearse and perform on a sound system and with a professional rhythm section. Eligibility MSVMA welcomes high school students to participate in its All-State Jazz Choir program. Participants must be enrolled and in good standing in their school's vocal music program. Their school must be a member of MSVMA. 2024 Audition Requirements Please provide URL addresses to unlisted YouTube videos for your audition. 8th Annual All-State Jazz Choir Conductor Grammy-nominated arranger Dr. Jeremy Fox earned his B.M. degree in Piano-Jazz Studies from Western Michigan University, and his M.M. and D.M.A. in Jazz Composition from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. For 14 years, Jeremy was a full-time instructor at The School for Music Vocations, conducting vocal and instrumental ensembles alongside renowned arrangers Phil Mattson and Jason Smith. He teaches Full-Time at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California – 20 miles east of Los Angeles. He is excited to work with Bruce Rogers to usher in a new Jazz Voice program at the college to go hand-in-hand with Mt. SAC’s phenomenal and award-winning ensembles. The new program will empower vocalists with skills not traditionally taught at most collegiate programs. Jeremy has himself been the recipient of 11 awards from Downbeat magazine, including ones for: Jazz Song, Jazz Arrangement, Studio Engineering, and for the Vocal Jazz Group he conducted as an undergraduate student. As an instructor ensembles have won “Best Community College Small Vocal Jazz Ensemble” 4 times, while earning Outstanding Performance 3 more times. His orchestral, chamber and big band music have been written for or performed by such artists as: Take 6, The Real Group, New York Voices, m-pact, Cadence, Theo Bleckmann, Terence Blanchard, John Secada, and Metropolitan Opera singers Eric Owens and Denyce Graves. Twice in 2013, he conducted and was musical director for a concert of “Bossa Nova Sinfónico” with the Costa Rican National Orchestra and Brazilian singer Rose Max. Videos from this concert have yielded millions of views on YouTube – The Girl from Ipanema video has been viewed almost 6 million times. He has also twice acted as the guest conductor for the famed Henry Mancini Institute Jazz Orchestra, based in Miami. Jeremy has been a camp director for more than 20 years. In the summer of 2023, Jeremy coordinated his 19th SMV Vocal Jazz Campin Creston, Iowa. The 19th Annual camp included 42 participants from 8 states and Canada. He also is in his 15th year co-conducting workshops designed to empower vocal/choral directors each summer called The Jazz Harmony Retreat. Jeremy has served as guest conductor of Honors and All-State choirs and vocal jazz ensembles in more than 16 states and provinces throughout North America. Jeremy is active each year as a clinician at festivals around the United States. He has also presented clinics multiple times at the Jazz Education Network National Conference, as well as at state MENC and national ACDA Conventions. He has in the past served on the faculty of the UNT Vocal Jazz Camp and the Steve Zegree Vocal Jazz Camp. Jeremy’s album “With Love” (Jazzbill Records) was released in Spring of 2014. It features big band and orchestral arrangements for a phenomenal line-up of singers, including Kevin Mahogany, Kate Reid, Kate McGarry, Lauren Kinhan and Peter Eldridge (from the New York Voices), Anders Edenroth (from the Real Group), Derek Fawcett, Rose Max, Wendy Pedersen, and Sunny Wilkinson.
